BLIND & VR: A POSTMORTEM

In 2014, a small Turinese development studio began working on Blind, a narrative VR adventure that saw the light in 2018: after four years of development and eight months since launch, founder and game designer Matteo Lana shares valuable insights about the entire process. In this talk, Lana discusses the path from conception to production, highlighting both opportunities and challenges, the affordances of emerging technologies, a series of unforeseen events, successes and "semi-failures", unexpected competitors and a development team that was willing to adapt to an evolving environment. The goal? To answer a question that developers ask themselves on a daily basis: Was it worth it?

Un piccolo studio italiano avvia nel 2014 lo sviluppo di Blind, un’avventura narrativa in realtà virtuale che vedrà la luce nel 2018: dopo quattro anni di sviluppo e otto mesi dall’introduzione sul mercato, il fondatore e game designer Matteo Lana fa il punto della situazione, ripercorrendo le tappe fondamentali del progetto. In questa presentazione, Lana illustra il percorso travagliato tra tecnologie emergenti, imprevisti, successi e “quasi fallimenti", competitor inaspettati e un team di sviluppo a dir poco fluido, per arrivare a rispondere alla domanda che ogni game designer si pone praticamente tutti i giorni: Ne è valsa la pena?

Matteo Lana entra nel mondo dei videogiochi all’età di 6 anni, quando riceve in regalo un Nintendo Entertainment System a 8 bit e ne è subito rapito. La sua passione lo porta a seguire un percorso di studi che gli permettesse di lavorare nel mondo videoludico, fino a fondare Tiny Bull Studios con Rocco Tartaglia, suo amico e compagno di università, per cominciare una faticosa ma appagante vita da sviluppatore indie. Ha guidato lo sviluppo di numerosi progetti B2B in ambito gaming e dei due titoli proprietari di Tiny Bull Studios, Blind e Omen Exitio: Plague.

Matteo Lana joined the world of video games at the age of six, when he received an 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System as a gift and was immediately ensnared. His passion drove him to pursue a kind of education that allowed him to work in the game industry. This trajectory culminated with the founding of Tiny Bull Studios with Rocco Tartaglia, his longtime friend and classmate. The two began an exhausting but ultimately rewarding life as an indie developer. Lana led the development of several B2B gaming projects including Tiny Bull Studios's proprietary titles, Blind and Omen Exitio: Plague.
